Who we Are

The International Funeral Society opened its first doors to the public on 23 August 1993. It started as a business that sold policies with a promise of the best Funeral Service.

After two years of market research, we realized that there was still a demand for Traditional Funeral services. According to research, a more complex need existed than the funeral undertakers were supplying at that time. This resulted in the formulation of a Funeral Plan designed for P.D.I (Previously Disadvantaged Individuals).

Due to this Unique Plan, we tried to register the Society under ‘’The Society Act”. It seemed, however, that this act had already been scrapped in 1962, which resulted in the original registration taking place in the former Bophuthatswana. In co-operation with CCB (Capital Computer Bureau), we were requested to register with the Department of Finance to enable us to obtain a letter of recommendation which would allow us to stop-order facilities from all Government Departments.

With the incorporation of Bophuthatswana into the RSA (Republic of South Africa), we had to re-apply for stop-order facilities, with proof of the necessary underwriting. Our underwriter SAFRICAN, supplied us with the required documentation.

During this time, laws affecting the Insurance Industry have changed considerably. Such legislation caused changes and even periods of uncertainty, but we strive to comply with each new requirement.

Notwithstanding the changes, The International Funeral Society opened its first mortuary in 1995. Since then several other branches have been opened, not only serving P.D.I have clientele, but all people of every nationality, race, culture, and language group.

Amidst an uncertain economy and extreme competition, The International Funeral Undertakers is expanding at a steady rate.
